I arrived in Australia from Nepal in March 2022 with a clear and determined vision: to become a data scientist and build a career defined by impact, innovation and continuous growth. Leaving home to pursue that dream was both exciting and daunting. I chose to settle in Canberra to undertake a Master of Data Science, knowing that the journey would require resilience, adaptability and an unwavering commitment to my goals.
Very quickly, I realised that academic achievement alone would not be enough. While my studies strengthened my technical foundation in data modelling, machine learning and analytics, I understood that real success would come from applying those skills in practical, high-impact environments. During my final semester, I volunteered remotely as a Business Analyst for a nonprofit organisation based in Sydney. In that role, I saw firsthand how data can influence strategic decisions, optimise operations and ultimately serve communities more effectively. It was my first exposure to the real-world value of data-driven thinking — and it reinforced my desire to work directly in data science within industry.
After graduating, however, I encountered a significant and sobering challenge. Many roles in Canberra require government security clearance — a barrier that international graduates often face. Despite submitting numerous applications, attending networking events and refining my portfolio, it sometimes felt as though passion and technical capability were not enough to unlock opportunity. Rather than lose momentum, I made a conscious decision to strengthen my pathway. I enrolled in a Professional Year Program, determined to gain local industry experience and broaden my professional exposure. As part of the program, I needed to complete a three-month internship — a requirement that would ultimately become the turning point in my journey.
That turning point came when I interviewed with Lizzie, Chief Technology Officer and Global Partner at Aris Zinc Group, for a Data Scientist internship. I still remember the optimism and energy I felt during that conversation. It was more than an interview — it was a dialogue about possibility, growth and contribution. When I was offered the internship, it felt like the door I had been knocking on had finally opened.
At Aris Zinc Group, I was entrusted with real responsibility from day one. I worked with live datasets, contributed to meaningful business projects, and gained exposure to the intersection of data science, governance and enterprise strategy. The experience moved beyond theory into impact. I was mentored closely by Kay, the Chief Information Security Officer, whose leadership sharpened my understanding of data protection, risk management and information governance. I was also supported and inspired by Manoj, Founder and Global Managing Director of Aris Zinc Group, whose vision for innovation and ethical growth set the tone for the organisation. Their mentorship extended beyond technical guidance it instilled confidence, accountability and a broader perspective on how technology drives organisational success.
During my time with the company, I received structured training across globally recognised frameworks and methodologies, including ISO standards, Agile Scrum and ITIL4. This significantly expanded my understanding of how data science integrates within enterprise architecture, operational excellence and governance structures. I learned not only how to build models and interpret data, but how to align analytical insights with strategic business objectives. This internship transformed my trajectory. I entered as a student with ambition; I emerged as a data professional with direction, clarity and purpose. Aris Zinc Group provided more than an internship it provided a platform. A platform to apply my academic knowledge, to contribute meaningfully to real-world initiatives, and to grow in confidence while tackling increasingly complex challenges.
As an international graduate far from home, being welcomed into an organisation that genuinely invests in emerging talent has meant more than I can express. The support, trust and belief shown to me by Lizzie, Kay and Manoj reinforced my sense of belonging within the Australian professional landscape. Being nominated for the Excellence in Internship Program Award is a tremendous honour one that I view not only as a personal achievement, but as a reflection of the mentorship, opportunity and encouragement I have received throughout this journey.
At the conclusion of my internship, I was proud to accept a full-time role as IT Business Analyst | Senior Data Scientist at Aris Zinc Group. This progression represents both recognition of my growth and the beginning of an exciting new chapter. I now get to mentor others and lead my own projects. In 2026, the future is incredibly bright. I am energised by the opportunity to lead major projects, contribute to innovation across the organisation, and continue evolving as a data leader within a company that believed in my potential from the very beginning.
What began as a dream in Nepal has grown into a career defined by purpose, perseverance and possibility and this is only the beginning.
